FTP is Dead. Long live Amazon S3 Downloads.

FTP is Dead. Long live Amazon S3 Downloads.

Two weeks ago we introduced FTPS (FTP Secure). Based on overwhelming feedback, today we’ve switched back to the old-style of downloads — with a few improvements. Each video page has a link at the bottom. (See image below.) Actually, there may be multiple links depending on the resources available. Click that link to download from Amazon S3. No matter where in the world you live, the download should be very fast. The hyperlink is good for a few moments before it expires. We do this to prevent people from posting the direct links to these videos on the internet. bandwidth is EXPENSIVE and we will be proactively disabling accounts that appear to abuse the download privilege. So, I would strongly advise that you DO NOT USE A DOWNLOAD MANAGER otherwise your activity will trigger our abuse profile. Also, again, please help us by not sharing the files with your friends. Each account is licensed for 1 individual. Please help us stay in business and encourage your friends and co-workers to purchase their own license. Thank you.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery … now cut it out!

I think this pic speaks for itself. Ruebel (if, that in fact, is your real name) just write me a note. I’ll sell you a copy (you’ll have to re-license a few bits, but it will cost less than $250) plus tell you ** everything I know about running a profitable site ** for $5000. That’s a STEAL, my friend.

Our 401k Plan for Videos

Our 401k Plan for Videos

At the beginning of this year we decided to proactively retire videos. This page explains a bit more about which video series were affected. http://www.learnvisualstudio.net/retire/ This page explains why I don’t just hide or delete the videos completely off the site: http://www.learnvisualstudio.net/why-i-keep-old-pages-around/ The goal is to keep the content fresh and pertinent. Frankly, I didn’t know how to do this in the past and I needed a better way to communicate to clients what I think they should know (and what was covered better elsewhere in a newer series).

Extreme Makeover: LearnVisualStudio.NET Edition

Extreme Makeover: LearnVisualStudio.NET Edition

Hey everyone. This post marks our first major website update in several years and the 7th version of the website since 2002. We’ve got new features for members (depending on member level — true streaming, FTP downloads, mass downloads, Q&A). We’ve got new features for non-members (the full text of our most popular C# starter series, a free 10-day trial membership, previews of almost all videos). Ok, so some of it is more finished than other parts, but it’s a work in progress and you can see where we’re going with all of this. It’s been a couple of years in the works, and a lot of work the past two or three months, and a new focus and direction and I’m excited. In upcoming blog posts, I’ll tell you more, but have a look around and enjoy!
